Religion or Cult?

A religion is a structured system of worship, rules, and beliefs centered around a god, multiple gods, or some other form of spiritual higher power. The weakness of a religion is that it lays a burden of strict obedience on followers, as the essence of a religion is believing and practicing the “right” things.

A cult is a system of worship and obedience centered around complete devotion to a human being. The weakness of a cult is that human beings are flawed, including cult leaders. Hence cults inevitably are full of deception, abuse, and exploitation.

The gospel stands alone amongst faith systems because it is perfectly in the middle, a system of both worship and obedience built around someone who was both God and man. Unlike in religion, there is no condemnation in Christ, for salvation comes from following the living Jesus instead of carefully keeping the precepts of a dead religious teacher. Unlike in cults, Jesus is perfectly righteous, and hence He treats his followers solely with goodness and truth. Thus, no other faith system can match the gospel of Jesus Christ.
